The venue for the conference is the Medicine Hat College campus in Medicine Hat, Alberta.  Medicine Hat is a small city situated in southeastern Alberta, along the South Saskatchewan River.  The nearest international airport is in Calgary, Alberta, which is three (3) hours driving distance from Medicine Hat.  There are daily connecting flights from Calgary to Medicine Hat on Air Canada Airlines.  Greyhound Bus Lines provides service from Calgary to Medicine Hat and east to Regina, Saskatchewan (5 hours driving distance) and Winnipeg.  There are also two other services from Calgary to Medicine Hat:

Canadian Bulletin of Medical History/Bulletin canadien d’histoire de la médecine

The CBHM/BCHM is looking for submissions for its fall 2012 and fall 2013 issues. The journal is interested in any submission that deals broadly with history of health and medicine. We accept manuscripts in English and French.

The Canadian Bulletin of Medical History/Bulletin canadien d’histoire de la médecine is one of the leading journals in the history of medicine. It is published twice a year by Wilfrid Laurier University Press for the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine. The Canadian Bulletin of Medical History presents refereed articles and other information on all aspects of the history of medicine, health care, and related disciplines.

Publié deux fois par an par Wilfrid Laurier University Press pour la Société canadienne d’histoire de la médecine, le Bulletin canadien d’histoire de la médecine présente des articles – soumis à la procédure d’évaluation par des lecteurs externes – et d’autres informations sur tous les aspects de l’histoire de la médecine, des soins et services de santé et des disciplines connexes.

The History of Medicine Days Conference is an annual two-day, nation-wide conference held at the University of Calgary.

Undergraduates and early graduate students are welcome to give a 10 to 12 minute presentation (with additional discussion time) on the history of medicine and health care.  The topics cover a wide range and would include areas from Classics, the History of Public Health, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Human Biology and Neuroscience etc.  Prizes are awarded and there is an Awards Banquet on the last evening of the conference.

Each student must present an original research attempt with new methodological perspectives on the topic and/or have a critical discussion following the presentation.

It is possible and encouraged that two to four students could present on a related topic which may be included in a panel form.  A suitable discussant will then be identified by the conference organizers to comment upon these papers.  We ask, however, that individual presentations and poster abstracts be sent in by only one author and not multiple authors.

A topnotch History of Medicine Keynote Speaker has been invited to give the 2012 keynote address.

The history is dotted with profiles of the people who mobilized communities to promote health and to prevent disease and injury over the past 100 years. Decade by decade, the history tells the stories of sanitary reformers who fought to improve the living conditions of the whole community and prevent disease and injury. Environmental pollution, contaminated food and water, birth control, vaccination and nutrition were challenges 100 years ago and remain important and sometimes controversial issues today. The history ends with the development of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and what many consider to be the launch of a new era in public health. It’s striking how so many public health stories from the past still resonate today and this book is dedicated to Canada’s public health reformers, past and present, who strive to build a better, healthier future for all.
